Terms of Use

These terms apply to use of Santa Maria Residents Directory. Accessing or using the service means you accept them. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. What This Reference Provides

Santa Maria Residents Directory is a privately operated reference to public rolls, record indexes, and historical collections associated with Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County, and California. It hosts no government record and is not affiliated with Santa Maria offices, Santa Barbara County departments, California agencies, courts, libraries, or records custodians.

2. Permitted and Prohibited Uses

Use the service only for lawful purposes. You may not use it, or information reached through it, to:

  • Stalk, harass, intimidate, threaten, or harm any person
  • Locate someone protected by a restraining or protective order
  • Commit identity theft or fraud
  • Make FCRA-regulated decisions (credit, employment, tenant, insurance)
  • Scrape, copy, or republish the site's content at scale
  • Interfere with the site's operation or security

3. No Consumer Reporting Agency Status

This service is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 U.S.C. section 1681 and following. Nothing on these pages, and nothing returned by a linked search tool, is a consumer report. It must not be used to evaluate eligibility for credit, employment, housing, insurance, or another purpose governed by the FCRA.

4. Outside Portals

Government portals and third-party services, including sponsored search tools, set their own terms and privacy practices. Santa Maria Residents Directory does not control their content, availability, pricing, results, or data handling.

5. No Warranties

The service is supplied “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. No promise is made that a page is accurate, complete, current, uninterrupted, or that an external portal will operate or return a correct result.

6. Liability Limits

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operators are not liable for direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from use of this service or a linked resource, including a decision made from a record reached through it.

7. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold the operators harmless from a claim or demand, including reasonable attorneys' fees, that results from misuse of the service or violation of these terms.

8. Intellectual Property

The original writing, design, logo, and layout are protected by copyright. Linking to a page and quoting a short attributed excerpt is allowed. Republishing full pages or copying the material systematically is not.

9. Revisions

These terms may be revised by posting a new version on this page. Continued use after an update means the revised terms are accepted.

10. Suspension of Access

Access may be blocked or limited for a user who violates these terms or abuses the service, with or without advance notice.

11. Governing Law

California law governs these terms without regard to conflict-of-law principles. References to public-record access use the California Public Records Act, Government Code sections 7920.000 and following, including the determination rule in section 7922.535 where relevant. The Act governs custodians; it does not make this private reference a records office.

12. Severability

If a provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in effect.

13. Questions

Questions about these terms may be sent through the Contact page.
